Updates from the Field - Sierra Leone

In 2017 Every Child Fed embarked on a research project in the Pujehun District of Sierra Leone in partnership with Project Peanut Butter, USAID, and the World Food Program (WFP). We are excited to report the project has been immensely successful, expanding into the Western Rural Area districts.

Currently, there are three supporting programs in Sierra Leone:

• Evaluation of expanded treatment criteria for Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM)

• Alternative RUTF formulation for Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM)

• Maternal nutrition program

The number of malnutrition clinics has grown to 83 throughout Pujehun and Western Rural Area districts of Sierra Leone. And in the past year, the work in Sierra Leone has continued to reach and train more mothers and save more children:

• Over 3,500 (3,729) MUAC tapes have been distributed to caregivers in Pujehun District.

• 1,489 mothers have been trained on the use of MUAC tapes and warning signs for referral to feeding clinics and the health center.

• 160 lead mothers have been trained throughout the district to teach and distribute MUAC tapes in their villages.

The programs have been hugely successful in engaging mothers to take charge of their family’s health and ensure that children are given the care and nutrition they need to thrive!
