Refining the Maternal Mental Health Program

We’re learning, growing, and improving how we serve mothers in Pujehun so they have what they need to care for themselves and their families.

After a year of piloting the maternal mental health program in Pujehun, we’re refining and scaling the program.

Refining - The original depression screening questionnaire (developed in collaboration with the Mental Health Coalition Sierra Leone) has been revised to more accurately determine the type of depression and the best response.

Mothers who suffer from situational depression caused by external factors are addressed more as social work cases. These mothers receive assistance with accessing social services and resources such as food, shelter, etc.

Mothers who suffer from endogenous depression are enrolled in our six week course of cognitive behavioral therapy. (Learn more at the Success Stories blog about the outcomes of the therapy)

With this improvement, we are able to be more efficient and effective in our work to support mothers.

Scaling - In 2023 we doubled the number of sites where we’re offering maternal mental health care to 10 sites.
